There are many myths about liberal democracy: that all of us are free to make our own decisions, that it is the greatest organization of society ever achievable, that it is the end point in an emancipatory struggle against systems of oppression, and that as uncontrolled artists we are free to create anything we want out of our lives. I believe democracy has to be understood through its most sophisticated tool for manufacturing consent - the spectacle. Democracy itself is represented to us from within the spectacle. Now more than ever we see that it's the spectacle which operates our lives, drawing everything in, recuperating it, and spitting it back out for popular consumption.

Democracy is a Spectacle Tags:
Pretty good movie. Don't know if I agree necessarily with the main argument that 'spectacles' are a means of control so much as a means of escape for people. Its easy to say that this is the main cause of complacency in modern life, however I would argue the shear toll of capitalism ie long hours, large bills, families to support etc, take up so much energy that its hard to look beyond that at times. So in our off hours many people just seek some relaxation and escape from today's harsh realities if only for a few hours a week.
I do not know how "amazing" it was, but Google PageRank said 0/10. It means no views, no popularity.
I'm sorry to dissapoint all those excited peoples, that left comments below...
"PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page."
The google rank doesn't mean that no one is watching this video, but it does mean that the creator isn't linking to it from hundreds/thousands of different sites. He probably is just letting the viewers of cinemocracy vote rather than trying to gather votes from myspace/etc.

Great video. The ideas
Submitted on August 6th, 2008 by AnonymousGreat video. The ideas dovetail nicely with Murray Edelman's notions of politics as spectacle. The images and editing are superb.
