Seven university students took their class on the road to the heart of the South, interviewing civil rights activists about their fight for equality and what it means in the face of Sen. Barack Obama's bid for the Presidency. Featuring historical figures from the Movement and leaders working for change, today.

Democracy: a Steady, Loving Confrontation Tags:
I can honesty say that if Obama does get in, and I'm hoping I'm wrong with this assumption, but the only change that most people will see is the skin color. How stereotypical most people are they will panic and think about everything the media has painted for the people. People need to wake up an see the world for what it is, an not be punked over and over again by Republicans bent on controlling the world and keeping fear in American citizens ( which is what they love to do) so change in more ways then one is needed if Obama does get in. Mini Documentaries like this is a start(Solid work by the way). People got to stop being so naive to the media garbage they see. Not all black people are rappers or gang members or rioter or hostile individuals. Everyone wants to be respected just like everyone else that walks this earth. Videos like this should wake people up to the veil they having blocking their vision of reality. Racism is a petty, lame excuse for being scared of change and quite frankly just sounds disgusting humorous and pathetic when it comes out of peoples mouth.
they are not cheating. they sincerely think that God is black. They want black president.
Unfortunally they didn't build civilization, but they can ruin it.
It will be bad story after all that America achieved with its fascinating democratical society.
It will be total mess in the world if Hussein Obama will be US president.
No country will affraid and respect USA - wars will be all over, including in US.
Look what's going now in Russia-Georgia. Mess began already...
a white man is the reason this country is at war. the white man is always trying to control things. i don't blame the muslims. don't let the white man take over what you believe. this is why we are at war. white man trying to control. america is fighting a losing battle. you can not win against those who take their own lives. i don't blame them. they will not conquer and destroy the muslims. the world is already a mess because of the white man. it is time for change. god said man was made in his image. it is a scientific fact that blacks were the first..you come from us. whites don't hate blacks. they want to be black. that why you tan, thats why whites think big lips are sexy. everything we are you want to be. used to laugh at the big asses we got. now white women pay for them. all a long whites have been jealous. i would be to if i was white. black is best and whites know it. that why white women choose black men. look around. we need to just get along because we all live in this country. we won't prosper hating each other

The historic nature of the Voting Rights struggle and a person of color in the running for the office of the presidency is a testiment to the courage and sacrifice of the voting rights pioneers. The students play out that historical event in clear language in this flim. From Dallas Texas to Dallas Alabama we support them dearly in their endeavor. We pray God's peace go with them always.
Working together works. This short film is a testimony of young people leading the way to open visions of what democracy should and be when citizens believe in their government's ability correct the wrong of pass laws and open the country to greater possibles for a country like USA can bounce back and set goals tobecome a better for county for its people and the world that strive to full fill their vision of becoming a democracy. Its an example of the common people taking responsibilities for its way of life, good and bad and making a difference.
The work these students (and teachers) did while being at the National Voting Rights Museum & Instiute will never be forgotten by the staff or me personally. It is rare to see how the learning process takes place when you are the object and subject of the learning. I encourage other schools and students to take note of what took place here. For studnets who never used a camera professionally to those who had limited knowledge, the finished project is breathtaking. The museum staff was moved to tears to watch this video. It is what democracy is and was about--creating a way out of no way "for the greater good" of building a just society.

I love the way the video makes a link between the Civil Rights movement and today. I went into the campaign a supporter of Hillary Clinton, who I think would also make a good president, but one of the things that moved me to support Obama was the fact that he had catalyzed interest among so many people who were otherwise cynical about 'politics as usual.' This video in part links the kinds of energy and commitment generated during the Civil Rights Movement to Obama's candidacy, and I think that's important. I'd love to see the whole thing. This is an inspiring, concrete video that offers the chance to think in complex ways about what has changed and what needs to change: how historical possibilities gradually arise.
I appreciate the honesty of this video --it's just plain spoken people recorded on video and I think very much captures the essence of this country's ongoing struggle to live up to its credo of freedom for all. Well done, Jen. I'm proud to call you my neighbor.
Is voting working? There were 611 votes before I voted -- I added my 5 stars, it said my vote had been saved, and it still says 611 votes. Do we have dangling chads, or is the voting closed?!
where can we access the whole documentary?! Fantastic! We can't 'be all we can be' without dealing with all that we are as a nation. Sadly, some of what we still are is racist. This video addresses that issue in a positive, constructive manner -- a steady, loving confrontation.
PS By the poor grammar and repetition of comments that are negative, I think they are all from one person...

God gave us this color and we are proud just as i said before some whites are killing themselves trying to get our color. jealous of us all along. so when say don't talk about..well i would be ashamed to if i came from a whited race. i come from a strong race, a race that still surrounded by it's enemies. we are the most imitated..music, style. i am so proud of being black. would't change it for nothing in the world.

I agree -- very insightful and positive, while addressing some harsh realities of our times. "we've come a long way, baby!" -- and clearly still have a long way to go to where skin color doesn't matter, as it shouldn't.
I love it. It was the young people who led the way in Montgomery during the Civil rights campaign- these very people who are speaking on this excellent film....they were young then. You, blacks are nice people, sensious, sensitive. But problem is - lets be honest - you can't do nothing exept dancing and singing rap or hip-hop. You never had no great scientists or biologists... You can't think.
Who'll respect USA if its leader will be one of you?
All you do is fighting for your rights. It's too poor.
What's your history ? Fighting for your rights, that's it!

Barack Hussein Obama is just a clown: he knows he can't rule this country.

Ha Ha. JEALOUS HUH. WE ARE THE MOST IMITATED. WHITES HATE US BECAUSE THEY KNOW BLACK IS BETTER. THAT WHY YA'LL TAN.
I usually do not feed into comments by the illiterate, but I had to touch this one. Sorry not all African Americans are show puppets. Yes we are an extremely talented race - don't hate. However, we are are also intellectuals. I think you really need to look closer into American history. Once you do you will find scientist such as Benjamin Baneker, George Washington Carver, Charles Henry Turner and Ernest Everett Just - to name a few. These people were part of the foundation of science as we know it. The main reason why I - an African American Woman decided to become a scientist.
The problem is that people such as yourself spend all of their intellectual capacity turning the mirrors on others who are actually accomplishing something - even if it just includes dance, singing or hip-hop - blaming us for the short comings that have occured in your life. Maybe if you spent more time educating yourself you wouldn't waste your time or ours with such idiodic, unresearched comments!!
You gotta be kidding me?! "you blacks are nice people..but"???? I hope someone posted this tongue in cheek to get some discussion going.
However, I KNOW this is the underlying attitude of some, which is also PART of why we need Barack Obama as our leader.
Go to factcheck.org -- read the non-partisan info re McCain's voting record -- increasingly right there with George W. Also check out the lies and misinformation in his current ad campaign. What informed citizen can take him seriously?
Dishonest, do whatever it takes to win, old white guy -- or a relatively young man with vision, hope and experience in creating change, and who is getting the young people in our society active & involved?
At least Obama can point out where our country is on a world map.
So, yeah, an inexperienced african american would lose the world's disrespect.
The coked up, spoiled child white guy who can't put together an intelligent sentence with a dictionary and a roll of duct tape and thinks God talks to him directly is the man we really need.
You really are sad. George Washington Carver was a scientist and he did way more than Peanuts. The mere fact that you have no idea all the things that African Americans have brought to this country shows your own ignorance. Mr. Obama was received well on his world tour because race is an American made concept which is not real it's an illusion. You probably have never been outside the country to have any reference point for how others see race. Most countries are based on class. We can think. I don't rap or sing or dance yet I possess a master's degree from a top ten University. I am 4th generation college student. Can you say that? The education system constantly tracks blacks and doesn't provide them the same education as whites because of that same thought process you have. Poverty is the factor that keeps individuals from reaching there dreams. That doesn't discriminate by race and for your information their are more whites who are on welfare than blacks and I see in my work many whites who can't read past a 4th grade reading level. Mr Obama graduated from Harvard so I think that he has already done more than you. I hope you take the time to get a more accurate picture of the country you live in. Roxanne in Pa
This is a brilliantly executed, moving tribute to the people who engaged the democracy in which we lived and held it to full account. Congratulations to the thoughtful students and teachers who searched for and found the right questions, and who asked those questions of thoughtful, candid people whose voices need to be heard over and overagain. I was a young teacher during the civil rights years, and I marvel every day that I have lived in such a dramatically changed world, even with the hard work work against racism that must continue. I celebrate Barak Obama, and the richly diverse community which has worked hard for him, advanced his and our cause, wisely voted for him and, with continued hard work, will put him in command of this country, where he really belongs.
Thanks to these film makers and to the film for carrying this vital message forward. And congratulations to Amizade for supporting this film on our watch!
This exemplifies the paradigm which Georgette Norman speaks of in this video. If we accept this mentality--which most educated individuals will have a hard time believing to be true, that blacks are inferior, that blacks are nothing--then we are perpetuating a more destructive act of terrorism than we have ever seen before. It is a terrorism that attacks from inside the American mind outward, feeding on the already oppressed as allowed by the ignorant masses.
Comments like these hearken back to the government-sponsored terrorism that blacks fought against throughout the 20th century. They overcame the federal hinderances that blockaded them from their rights; however, it isn't until we all reach a mutual respect--all people--that we can finally be exonerated from the incapacitation of racism and senseless hatred.
Blacks are not inferior. Blacks will never be inferior. In fact, as a white male, I am certain my own genetic code is no different from that of a black man, or even black woman. Neither color nor sex make any difference whatsoever. It is an ugly illusion that the ignorant use as a blind defense to demoralize those who may be outwardly different, and to give themselves a sense of entitlement, a sense of superiority that is both unfounded and naive.
When you think of it, we are all human. We all have the same needs to survive. One of those needs is respect. Too many have already died out of disrespect striving to actualize this very cause. Please do not preach ignorance in lieu of what is right.
If everyone who has watched this video in its entirety would take five more minutes out of their day to read the comments posted about this video, they would all understand why the film is called a steady, loving confrontation. This short merely highlights the injustices coupled with the hopes for tomorrow's democracy. To brazenly compare this film to Harlem, New York City, one of the MOST culturally diverse cities in the WORLD, is naive. To criticize a film about the struggles of black america and racism because it features BLACK PEOPLE, is pitifully ignorant. The poorly articulated and blindly proofread negative comments about this video prove why democracy is a steady, loving confrontation. After all of these years, ignorance still exists in the mainstream, enough for people to feel confident about spreading their lack of knowledge with others. Please, for the sake of democracy and for the sake or our country's future, step out of your own mind, because whether you approve of Senator Obama or not, he's still that much closer to becoming the President, and the confrontation concerning race and democracy perserveres, stronger than ever.
I can attest to the fact that one of the students who made this film is from white, middle class America. She was proud and honored to be a part of this film and to learn about a part of history that most white, middle class Americans either don't know about or don't want to admit to. Thanks to Jen and her students for being a voice that needed to be heard.
This was awesome! I loved seeing the "real" people and hearing their thoughts and comments. Very relevant, very moving and very well done. I think the Obama campaign would love to see this and use in some of their advertisements.

five stars!!!!!!
I enjoyed the content and the quality of this film. It presents in a powerful and emotional way the struggle for democracy in a country filled with continuing disparities. It displays various opinions and perspectives and does not try to preach or to force viewer into a certain mode of thinking. It presents the information in an objective way yet still transfers a raw power and emotional attachment to the viewer. It humanizes the movement and contains the seeds of knowledge from the unsung heroes who rewrote American history through their courageousness.

Submitted on August 11th, 2008 by AnonymousYou gotta be kidding me?!
You can't be that benighted.

At least Obama can point out
Submitted on August 8th, 2008 by AnonymousAt least Obama can point out where our country is on a world map.
So, yeah, an inexperienced african american would lose the world's disrespect.
The coked up, spoiled child white guy who can't put together an intelligent sentence with a dictionary and a roll of duct tape and thinks God talks to him directly is the man we really need.
So... the point of terrorism
Submitted on August 8th, 2008 by AnonymousSo... the point of terrorism is to make you afraid and irrational. Guess the terrorists beat you, eh buddy?
If you aren't going to be part of the solution, shut your mouth and stay the hell out of America's way.
Please be a good ('ol') boy and go have a nice evening with your sister/wife David Duke.

You really are sad. George
Submitted on August 3rd, 2008 by AnonymousYou really are sad.
This is a brilliantly
Submitted on August 2nd, 2008 by AnonymousThis is a brilliantly executed, moving tribute to the people who engaged the democracy in which we lived and held it to full account.

This exemplifies the
Submitted on August 2nd, 2008 by AnonymousThis exemplifies the paradigm which Georgette Norman speaks of in this video.
If everyone who has watched
Submitted on July 30th, 2008 by AnonymousIf everyone who has watched this video in its entirety would take five more minutes out of their day to read the comments posted about this video, they would all understand why the film is called a steady, loving confrontation.

I can attest to the fact
Submitted on July 27th, 2008 by AnonymousI can attest to the fact that one of the students who made this film is from white, middle class America. She was proud and honored to be a part of this film and to learn about a part of history that most white, middle class Americans either don't know about or don't want to admit to. Thanks to Jen and her students for being a voice that needed to be heard.
This was awesome! I loved
Submitted on July 27th, 2008 by AnonymousThis was awesome! I loved seeing the "real" people and hearing their thoughts and comments. Very relevant, very moving and very well done. I think the Obama campaign would love to see this and use in some of their advertisements.

Submitted on July 27th, 2008 by AnonymousI enjoyed the content and the quality of this film.

Jen & Company, Very well

Very well done! Very moving to see that generation of people express their thoughts and feelings. What a great quote you used for the title!
You and your students should feel very good to have evoked the sentiments here. They show you how far we've come, and how much farther we need to go.
